Admission Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university
  • All official transcripts
  • No GMAT required

Applicants to the UIS Online MS Healthcare Informatics must meet at least one of the following conditions for admission.

  • Master’s degree or higher from a regionally accredited college or university. No GMAT will be required.
  • Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college or university with a 2.5 GPA or higher. No GMAT will be required.
  • Candidates with a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college or university with a 2.0 – 2.49 GPA and a minimum of 2 years of substantial experience and responsibility in a field related to healthcare informatics and documented in a current resume will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

An overview of the healthcare system and the healthcare industry with an emphasis on public health. An introduction to the regulatory complexity of the healthcare environment and an in-depth exploration of key federal and state laws including medical malpractice and patient care laws.

Fundamental networking concepts will be explained through a network model that divides data communications into multiple layers, such as application, network and transport, data links and the physical layer. The course covers technologies used in different types of networks, such as local area networks and the internet. It also introduces networked healthcare, devices, applications and services.

This course consists of discussions of key concepts and practices of healthcare informatics on how information technology supports patient care and healthcare organizations. Topics include ethics, electronic health records, information infrastructure, data and information, basic research design, interoperability, privacy and security for health information, consumer health informatics, and trends and emerging technologies.

This course introduces a wide range of theoretical and practical techniques and methodologies in healthcare information systems analysis and design. The instructor will train the students to assume the roles of informaticists, business analysts and system analysts in the healthcare industry. Topics to be discussed include analysis, design, modeling of Electronic Health Record (EHR) and other information systems.

Students and instructors will discuss technical and managerial security issues in generation, storage and access of healthcare information. Technical issues include threats, vulnerabilities, and controls in healthcare information systems. Managerial issues include risk management, security planning, disaster recovery, legal and ethical issues, such as privacy and confidentiality of patient information.

This course introduces database theory and development techniques where the focus is on Data Retrieval and Data Preparation. Topics discussed include data modeling theories (entry-relationship diagrams), Normalization Theory, Structure Query Language (SQL), Report Writing, and a Survey of Contemporary Database Eco-Systems. The main goal is to build knowledge foundation to assume role as a data analyst.

Students and instructors will discuss data mining concepts, processes and techniques to develop and analyze exploratory and predictive models to generate meaningful insights in healthcare domain. Data-driven healthcare applications will be implemented with hands-on projects using data mining techniques. Prerequisite is HCI 542.

This course introduces fundamentals of health information exchange (HIE). Students will discuss key concepts and practices of health information exchange and coordination across multiple healthcare providers as well as review health IT standards, privacy, security and health information interoperability.

This course is an introduction to strategies used to manage and deliver healthcare services. It consists of analytical methods and tools to improve performance of healthcare processes.

Introduce project management concepts and methodologies. Manage projects in healthcare organizational context, including the processes related to initiating, planning, executing, controlling, reporting and closing a project. Corse instructors will discuss project time, cost and risk management and also describe resource management and managing the organizational change to communicate projects in the healthcare industry.
